Less than two weeks until the NFL trade deadline, the Houston Texans have continued to engage in conversations regarding quarterback Deshaun Watson. One source characterized the discussions with the Miami Dolphins as serious.

However, multiple other sources told The Athletic as of Wednesday evening a deal does not appear to be imminent. A couple of sources with knowledge of the situation indicated it’s common this time of year for teams to drum up interest in a player to increase the trade price.

The Houston Chronicle first reported on Wednesday that a trade for Watson could be coming this week. The Texans have been asking teams for three first-round draft picks and two or three more assets, including a collection of picks or players, according to a source.

In addition to the Dolphins, the Texans have had recent discussions with the Carolina Panthers and Philadelphia Eagles, according to sources. However, the seriousness of those discussions — ranging from a casual conversation to actual trade negotiations — hasn’t been disclosed.

Watson, who has a no-trade clause, has been inactive for all six games this season. He has requested a trade but has continuously reported to the Texans’ facility to work out apart from the team.

Watson faces 22 active civil lawsuits accusing of him Deshaun Watson sexual misconduct and sexual assault in various massage appointments but has denied any wrongdoing. In addition to the civil lawsuits, Watson’s lawyer, Rusty Hardin, said on July 26 that at least 10 women have filed complaints with Houston Police. Watson has also met with investigators from the FBI.

An NFL investigation is also ongoing, and the attorney representing the plaintiffs in the civil suits, Tony Buzbee, said on Aug. 13 that 10 of his clients had met with league investigators and an 11th was scheduled to do so. For now, Watson remains eligible to play.

Sources have also indicated the Texans have not shown interest in acquiring quarterback Tua Tagovailoa from the Dolphins, nor has Tagovailoa’s name come up in trade discussions as of Wednesday evening. The fifth pick of the 2020 draft has won eight of his 15 starts over the last two seasons, completing 64.1 percent of his passes for 2,358 yards, 14 touchdowns and seven interceptions, and he has 132 rushing yards and four touchdowns.

Watson, a first-round pick in 2017, signed a four-year, $156 million contract extension with the Texans in September 2020. He remains under contract through 2025.
