Arizona governor signs abortion ban for genetic issues

Doctors who perform an abortion solely because the child has a survivable genetic issue can face felony charges. The proposal also contains a raft of other provisions sought by abortion opponents.

The measure passed the Republican-controlled Legislature on party-line votes over unanimous opposition from minority Democrats. The Republican governor is an abortion opponent who has never vetoed a piece of anti-abortion legislation.

Senate Bill 1457 moved through the Legislature in fits and starts, stalling twice before moving again amid intense pressure by abortion opponents on GOP lawmakers who opposed some of its provisions. It finally passed both chambers last week.

The abortion bill as originally written made it a felony for a doctor to perform the procedure because the fetus has a genetic abnormality such as Down syndrome, and contained a slew of other provisions, including one that confers all civil rights to unborn children. Democrats call that “personhood” provision a backdoor way to allow criminal charges against a woman who has an abortion.

In addition to the ban on abortions for genetic abnormalities and the “personhood” provision, the bill bans mail delivery of abortion-inducing medication, allows the father or maternal grandparents of a fetus aborted due to a genetic issue to sue, and bans the spending of any state money toward organizations that provide abortion care.

The measure also requires fetal remains to be buried or cremated, and it forbids state universities from providing abortion care.

“There’s immeasurable value in every single life — regardless of genetic makeup,” Ducey said in a statement. “We will continue to prioritize protecting life in our preborn children, and this legislation goes a long way in protecting real human lives."

The bill was amended twice to allay the concerns of a pair of Republicans — one worried that a woman would be forced to carry a fetus that could not survive and a second concerned that a doctors' medical decisions could be overruled by a jury. That GOP-backed amendment also clarified that the “personhood" provision does not ban in-vitro fertilization.

The Democrats issued a lengthy written rebuttal to the bill after the final amendment.

The measure was a top priority for the social conservative group Center for Arizona Policy. Its president, Cathi Herrod, routinely backs anti-abortion bills in the Legislature. National anti-abortion groups hailed its passage.

Minutes after the governor acted, Herrod sent out a news release with the subject line “Life Wins!”

“Today, Arizonans win. Arizona children diagnosed with disabilities prior to birth will no longer be discriminated against,” Herrod wrote in the release. “Arizona women will be ensured commonsense safeguards if they choose the abortion pill. Arizona taxpayers will not be forced to support abortions at public colleges and universities, and the laws of Arizona will be interpreted to value all human life.”

Abortion rights groups had rallied at the Capitol on Monday, urging Ducey to veto the measure and presenting him with petitions signed by opponents of the bill.

Democrats lamented the governor's action, including Rep. Diego Espinoza of Tolleson.

“Gov. Ducey’s decision to sign SB1457 is not pro-life. It is anti-families, anti-woman, and anti-doctor,” Espinoza tweeted. “I’m disappointed to see Arizona moving in this direction, ignoring the needs and desires of doctors, women, and families for an extreme political agenda.”

Republican-controlled legislatures in Arizona and several other states — emboldened by the possibility that a more conservative U.S. Supreme Court could overturn Roe vs. Wade, the 1973 decision that found women have a constitutional right to seek an abortion — have embraced proposals this year that could completely ban abortion. An Arizona proposal doing that, however, has not advanced.

Earlier this month, a divided federal appeals court lifted the hold on a similar Ohio law that prohibits doctors from performing abortions based on a fetal diagnosis of Down syndrome.

Judges of the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals narrowly reversed two earlier decisions blocking enforcement of Ohio's 2017 law. A majority of the appeals court said the law doesn’t impede a woman’s right to an abortion.

Monday's amendment to the Arizona bill also added a legislative intent clause that included much of the reasoning the appeals court used in the Ohio decision.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League: Green Lantern Actor Reacts

Zack Snyder's Justice League was in director Zack Snyder's original vision for the movie, but not everything went according to plan. Instead of Martian Manhunter, Snyder wanted to introduce John Stewart into the DC Extended Universe. Unfortunately, the injured scene was cut even though it was filmed. In Justice Con, Snyder revealed that the actor Green Lantern filmed the scene was Wayne T. Carr.

"[Zack] said, 'We'll shoot it, we'll see what the studio says,'" the actor Green Lantern told LightCast (Comicbook's transcription). “This is crazy because we filmed it in what I would call 'Driveway Studios'. He called me after he showed it to everyone. I think it was the second time because they watched it partially. He was like, "They won't let me do this."

While the cut scene disappointed actor Green Lantern, Carr was grateful for the opportunity and appreciated the fan's response.

“When I see the full vision, I have gone through the journey like everyone has gone through the journey. Finally, I realized, 'Ugh. I am not part of this. Honey. That just warmed my heart once all the concept art and content started to go down. It is nothing but love from fans, man. Like, I wasn't even in the movie, and I just got the positive feedback from everyone and support. It's super crazy. It's completely crazy, but I love it. "

Anthony Hopkins After shocking Oscar

After shocking Oscar win, Anthony Hopkins posts video acknowledging Chadwick Boseman

Good morning. Here I am in my homeland of Wales and at 83 years of age I did not expect to get this award, I really didn’t. I’m very grateful to the Academy, and thank you,” said Hopkins. “I want to pay tribute to Chadwick Boseman, who was taken from us far too early, and again thank you all very much. I really did not expect this. So, I feel very privileged and honored … thank you.”

Best Actor Award was the final award of the night, with many arguing it was a design tribute to Boseman, who was supposed to win. However, Hopkins eventually won the award, and since he was not present the show ended abruptly.

This is the second Academy Award for Best Actor, his first in 1992 as the cannibal Hannibal Lecter in "Silence of the Sheeps", making Hopkins the oldest person to receive the award. .

Although Hopkins' victory was unexpected, he has received a lot of praise for his role.

How The 1922 Horror Film NOSFERATU Laid The Groundwork For Gothic T Shirt

I was about 16-years-old when I first watched F.W. Murnau’s 1922 horror film Nosferatu. This is the first Vampire movie ever made and I was completely engulfed in the film. The movie is visually stunning and it's because of those creepy visuals that Nosferatu is one of the greatest and most iconic horror movies ever made.

Thanks to One Hundred Years of Cinema, we have a video essay for the film that you've got to watch that explains how nosferatu laid the groundwork for gothic cinema. Here's the description:

Nosferatu is maybe the most iconic horror film ever made. It's creepy imagery has cemented it in the public consciousness. In this film essay we will be looking at how the first vampire movie laid the groundwork for the Gothic cinema of Universal and Hammer.

Helen McCrory, British Star of Stage, Film and TV, Dies at 52

Helen McCrory, the accomplished and versatile British stage and screen actress who played Narcissa Malfoy in three Harry Potter films and the matriarch Polly Gray on the BBC series “Peaky Blinders,” in addition to earning critical plaudits for her stage work, has died at her home in north London. She was 52.

Her death, from cancer, was announced on social media on Friday by her husband, the actor Damian Lewis.

Ms. McCrory was a familiar face to London theater audiences and to British television and film viewers well before she won wider recognition in the Harry Potter movies. She began her career in the theater in 1990, straight out of drama school, playing Gwendolen in a production of Oscar Wilde’s “The Importance of Being Earnest” in Harrogate, Yorkshire. In 1993, the director Richard Eyre, who was the head of the National Theater, cast her in the leading role in his production of Arthur Wing Pinero’s comic play “Trelawny of the ‘Wells,’” for which she earned glowing reviews.

“Helen McCrory, in the title role, perfectly captures Rose’s crossover from a lovelorn ingénue to wounded woman,” Sheridan Morley wrote in The International Herald Tribune.

“I’m much happier as I’ve got older,” Ms. McCrory told The Times of London in 2016. “Age has given me nothing but confidence, security and joy.” She added, “To me, ‘Helen McCrory, 47’ means nothing. ‘Helen McCrory, bad housewife and argumentative after a bottle of gin’ would be much more relevant.”

In recent years she appeared on TV in leading roles in David Hare’s political drama “Roadkill” and James Graham’s “Quiz” and as the voice of a daemon in “His Dark Materials.”

Last year, Ms. McCrory and Mr. Lewis spearheaded a fund-raising effort to provide meals for members of the National Health staff amid the coronavirus pandemic. Their work led to donations of close to £1 million ($1.4 million) to the Feed NHS Scheme. Just a month ago, on March 12, she appeared with Mr. Lewis on ITV’s “Good Morning Britain” to discuss the project.

Her illness was not widely known, and her death came as a surprise to most. Complete information on survivors, in addition to her husband and children, was not immediately available.

10 Reasons to Watch Vagrant Queen’s Single Perfect Season

The amount of shows with Black female leads are in the single digits. And the amount that are also sapphic? Could be counted on one hand. Vagrant Queen follows Elida/Eldaya, played by Adriyan Rae, a Black female alien queen who is on the run from her planet’s people after seeing revolutionaries kill her family. She then teams up with a human man, played by Tim Rozon, named Isaac, who is just trying to make it back to Earth where his wife and newborn son are. Later, they meet Amae, Elida’s love interest played by Alex McGregor, who joins their merry band after evading an attack by the same revolutionaries who almost killed her brother.

I cannot even begin to imagine what a show like this could mean to a queer Black woman, but I know for at least me personally, to see such a positive relationship between two women in the science fiction genre and on a major network was life-changing.

I started to watch this show live after a few episodes had already aired, and seeing the community support for the show on social media, especially Twitter, gave me such high hopes for the show’s future. Vagrant Queen is definitely a tongue-in-cheek, campy style of a show, and despite it dealing with heavy topics like grief, survivor’s guilt, and more, it still manages to balance the darker moments with lighter, laugh out loud comedy.

Obviously, therefore, there is a lot to love about this QBIPOC led show, so here are 10 reasons why you should absolutely watch Vagrant Queen right now.

Like I mentioned earlier, there are so few shows with a Black woman, let alone a queer Black woman, and this queer Black female character gets to fall in love and kiss another woman on screen, all while getting into intergalactic hijinks. This shouldn’t be that big of a deal, but it totally is, and it’s both the number one reason I give the Syfy channel the stink eye for cancelling this show and also believe that everyone should watch.
